Introducing Halcyon Litigation Funding — Fair, Transparent Capital for UK Contingency Law Firms

15 October, 2025

Today marks the official launch of Halcyon Litigation Funding, a new funding platform built by solicitors, for solicitors. Our mission is simple: to bring fair, sustainable, and transparent capital solutions to contingency-based law practices, while offering investors access to a well-structured and responsibly managed alternative asset class.

Why Halcyon Exists

Many UK law firms operating on a “no win, no fee” (contingency or conditional fee) model face a financial dilemma: case costs and operating burdens can be heavy, but traditional lenders often view such practices as too risky or unpredictable. Meanwhile, many litigation funders impose rigid or punitive terms that misalign interests.

At Halcyon, we believe there is a better way—one grounded in alignment, shared risk, and long-term partnership. Because we were founded by solicitors, we understand the pressures, constraints, and ambitions of litigation practices. Our goal is to let law firms grow their contingency practices without being hamstrung by unsustainable debt or restrictive funding terms.

What Halcyon Does

  • Non-recourse capital for law firms
We provide funds for case costs, case expansions or acquisitions, but only expect repayment from successful outcomes. That means the downside is borne by us, not by the firm, when cases are unsuccessful.
  • Shared-risk, aligned model
We are in this together. Our return depends on your success, so we structure deals in ways where your whole firm benefits when cases are won.
  • Rigorous case underwriting & data-driven decision making
Before committing capital, we analyse historical settlement data, case progress metrics, and risk profiles. This helps us allocate funding sensibly and avoid overcommitment.
  • Escrowed funds, transparency & real-time monitoring
All capital is managed via escrow to ensure integrity in fund application. Our systems (including AI / data tools) will monitor case performance so both firm and Halcyon can stay on top of outcomes and adjustments.
  • Tailored capital flow & repayment structure
Rather than upfront lumps, capital is drawn down monthly (or as needed) to smooth cash flow and reduce waste. Repayments are triggered only on realized successes, with a fair division of returns.

What We Aim to Achieve

  1. Empower contingency practices to scale
Many law firms hesitate to expand their conditional fee practices due to capital constraints. We intend to remove that barrier, enabling strategic growth while preserving financial stability.
  2. Elevate standards of litigation funding in the UK
Transparency, fairness, alignment, and accountability are central to our ethos. We aim to set a benchmark in the industry—one that encourages healthier relationships with funded firms and greater trust among stakeholders.
  3. Deliver risk-adjusted returns to investors
Litigation funding is an asset that is uncorrelated with many financial markets. Through disciplined underwriting and structured partnerships, we intend to offer investors predictable, attractive returns over time (while being upfront about risks).
  4. Promote access to justice
By reducing the capital pressures on law firms, they can take on meritorious cases that might otherwise go unfunded. In that way, we hope to indirectly support stronger access to legal redress for clients who might be under-resourced.
  5. Build a sustainable, long-term business
We are not looking for short-term gain. Our model is designed to endure—balancing growth, capital discipline, regulatory clarity, and operational excellence.
